Foremost, boat shoes are a 3-season shoe

"Your shoes look so goofy!" she giggled. "How can that be? They are my new boat shoes, they are awesome, and everyone who's anyone has a pair nowadays!" he said back.

Don't make the mistake that most people make. Just because you have the new shoes, doesn't mean you have the look. The following are a few rules you must keep in mind when wearing new boat shoes (also referred to as topsiders).

Foremost, boat shoes are a 3-season shoe. That means you should not wear them during the winter. Don't ask why. It's a finicky rule of style.

Next, wear topsiders as a casual or performance (sailing) shoe, not as a dress loafer. They work perfectly with any outfit from casual to dress-casual. For instance, wear a pair of boat shoes with shorts or cargos and a nice t-shirt or polo. Remember, loafers for the office and boat shoes for out on the town, and not the other way around.

Third, wear topsiders primarily without socks. Why? Because that makes them easy to slip on and slip off. It also make it easy for the foot to breath, which prevents odor from building up within the shoe. When jeans or pants are necessary, feel free to wear them with socks, but always make sure the socks match the outfit--the safest, go-to sock color is black.

By following these simple style rules, you are bound to be the talk of the town when wearing a pair boat shoes. They are back in style, and you can join the bandwagon as long as you know how to pull off the look.
